The solo founder stack
As one person your constraint is attention, not capability. Every tool you add is something to maintain, log into and pay for. Three is usually right; five is already a stretch.
The layers that matter
01
Build
One place where the product or site gets made.
02
Reach
One channel — newsletter, outbound or research-led — that you actually run weekly.
03
Get paid
Checkout or invoicing that doesn't need your attention once it's set up.
What a solo founder doesn't need yet
These are all reasonable purchases later and expensive distractions now:
- A CRM. A spreadsheet holds a one-person pipeline perfectly well.
- HR, payroll or onboarding software. There's no one to onboard.
- A full analytics suite before you have traffic worth segmenting.
Use free tiers deliberately
Most categories have a free tier that comfortably covers one person. Start there and upgrade when a limit actually blocks you — not when a banner suggests it. Write down which limit would force the upgrade; if you can't name one, you don't need the paid plan.
The review that keeps it lean
Once a quarter, list every subscription and the last thing it did for you. Anything you can't answer for gets cancelled. Solo stacks bloat quietly, one trial at a time.
What it costs
Under $50 a month is realistic, and often $0 for the first few months.
